An excerpt from my Facebook Fan Page. I felt it should be shared on a larger scale, it is something I am very very passionate about. Even here on the blog – the photograph looks nothing does in its original state.
Friends, I am excited but a little disappointed while sharing this picture with you. I am quite happy with the planning and effort that went into creating this portrait and the time spent perfecting it after. So, yesterday after finishing this I shared it with my sister through Facebook and was appalled at how the Facebook compression ruined my perfectly hand-edited photograph. The edges are not black and lifeless; they are beautifully tinted and filled with contrast. This is one of the greatest flaws in digital media – to you this portrait make look too green, too blue or maybe too yellow. It may be pixelated on an oversized screen or muddied on your iPhone. Sending you this image via the internet gives me no control over the final representation of my work. It’s a disservice to me, to you and to the clients represented in my work.
There is one way, however, that I can control the final product. One sure way to make sure my clients are getting the exact portrait promised; and that is to professionally print each and every portrait that leaves my hands and goes into my client’s home. I carefully work each image to perfection both in camera and in post before presenting it to my client. I order various products from all sorts of vendors to be sure that what I am offering is of the absolute best quality. I meet with my clients in person and we sort through pictures to choose the perfect ones to display on their walls – and then you see this, only a small glimpse of the full beauty of this actual image (to which I am biased, as this portrait is of my eldest daughter).
Friends, you won’t find me offering rock bottom prices on all digital sessions. You won’t find me pushing the ease of instant digital downloads and disks with a few days turn around. You have spent time looking through websites and reading reviews to choose me as your photographer. You spent countless hours shopping and going through closets to make sure your family looks their best. You read through your welcome packet, the clothing guide, you’ve followed every suggestion to a T, tried to have a calm morning before your session (and maybe even bribed your husband to be on his best behavior). You arrived to your session, had fun, shared smiles and your story with me. You have invested so much more than money in this experience and you should reap the benefits.
Because my friend, you, your time, and your family are worth so much more than memories lost on a hard drive. Your family’s memories deserve the respect of being displayed and viewed every day and not sitting on a disk in a drawer. Your portraits deserve a center point in your home for you and your children to relish in your connection daily.
And that, my beautiful client, is why you will receive a artfully finished portrait in your hand at the end of our time together. Because that’s the work that I believe in…
We will discuss any ideas you have for your session, your personal style, your family and interests and find a day to schedule you. Having a photo session with Nena Metcalf Photography won’t just result with images on a disk – you will end your session with art on your walls to enjoy every day. Lets talk and see what kind of beauty we can create. I’m looking forward to meeting you!
